New Yorker Obama Picture

Have you picked up your copy of the New Yorker?

New Yorker Magizine with Obama

If you haven’t heard the New Yorker Magizine published a very controversial cartoon on the cover with Barack Obama and Ms. Obama.  If you can’t tell the image has Sen. Obama dressed as a middle easterner in the ovall office of the White House.  Not that a Muslim nor a person dressed in Middle Eastern clothing has ever been there.  The appalling part is the picture of Osama Bin Laden over the fireplace with an American Flag burning.  If that wasn’t enough Ms. Obama is dressed as a terrorist with an assualt rifle slung over her shoulder.

If the picture didn’t speak a thousand words I will add my own few.  This illustration is completely the lowest blow in campaign politics I have witnessed.  I’m not old enough to remember the Watergate Hotel break but this is bad.  It doesn’t matter what you party affiliation…  This is dirty politics.  We may never know who, what, or why this cartoon was commissioned but it is wrong.  It is wrong!  Really that is all that can be said about it.

If you want to read more about the article go and pick up a copy of the New Yorker.  If not check out what CBC News had to say about it.  CBC is an international news agency based in Canada.

Gas Prices affect everyone

Gas prices really hit home and affect everyone. No one really knows the true effect of gas prices until it is too late. I worry about the gas prices effect on the economy as a whole. Today’s article from CNN shows the impact it could have on airlines. As a frequent flyer and traveler I have sidelined some of my trips due to the cost. In fact a trip across town is taken into consideration more closely because of the sheer cost of fuel. As a once frequent restaurant goer I now eat at home more than ever before. The cost of fuel really effects my day-to-day life.

With the volatility of the airlines these days anything that effects them shows a true representation of the American family. Like that of the already hard hit American families airlines are hurting too as can bee seen in the quote from the CNN article, “Already-depleted cash reserves are dwindling fast, and unless the fuel crisis lessens, airlines face not the now-familiar protracted restructuring in bankruptcy, but outright and immediate extinction”. The families will not disappear but it will affect the American way of life that we have grown so accustomed too.

Read the article over at CNN, Fuel costs could ‘devastate’ airlines.

Fuel costs could ‘devastate’ airlines

Rising fuel costs could drive major air carriers out of business and hurt economy, says report.

By Aaron Smith, CNNMoney.com staff writer

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) — The skyrocketing price of fuel could “devastate” the airline industry and hurt the economy, according to a report from the Business Travel Coalition released Monday.

Pressured by rising fuel costs, major airlines could collapse as early as this year, the coalition said. The failure of just one airline could disrupt travel for 200,000 to 300,000 daily passengers and cause between 30,000 and 75,000 immediate job losses, said the coalition.

The failure of more than one airline could result in 100,000 job losses, said the report, particularly in such hubs as Atlanta for Delta Air Lines (DAL, Fortune 500), Chicago for UAL Corp.’s (UAL) United Airlines and Continental Airlines’ (CAL, Fortune 500) Houston.

“Already-depleted cash reserves are dwindling fast, and unless the fuel crisis lessens, airlines face not the now-familiar protracted restructuring in bankruptcy, but outright and immediate extinction,” said the report.

Business travel would be disrupted, as would the airborne supply chain for goods like pharmaceuticals, electronics and auto parts.

Rising fuel costs hit airlines hard. Fuel expenses are expected to total $61.2 billion this year, compared to $41.2 billion in 2007, according to the Air Transport Association.

Some major airlines, such as Northwest Airlines (NWA, Fortune 500), United Airlines, Delta and U.S. Airways (LCC, Fortune 500), continue to operate despite filing for bankruptcy in the last several years. But the credit crisis would make it harder for a bankrupt airline to keep operating while trying to restructure its business, according to the coalition.

The lack of bankruptcy financing is part of the reason why smaller airlines like Aloha, ATA, Champion, Eos and Skybus recently stopped operating, said the report.

Analysts who cover the industry disagreed that a major carrier would crumble this year, because the airlines still have enough cash to survive into 2009.

“I think it’s more likely that any large airline bankruptcies would occur next year,” said Philip Baggaley of Standard & Poor’s, who has assigned his lowest ratings to U.S. Airways, AirTran Airways (AAI) and JetBlue Airways (JBLU). “At least at current fuel prices, most of them have enough liquidity to get through several more quarters. But it could get rather more uncomfortable by 2009. Oil prices are the largest variable.”

Robert Mann Jr., an industry consultant, said the airlines have enough cash to ward off collapse for this year, and that capacity cuts should help them survive.

“The cuts in flying are designed to cut cash loss and that’s what I hope happens,” said Mann.

Raymond Neidl of Calyon Securities agreed that the airlines have enough cash to avoid disaster in the near future, though he expects that the number of carriers will shrink through consolidation.

“Nobody’s going into bankruptcy this year,” said Neidl. “Airlines die slow, and they always seem to come up with the cash to keep going.”

Delta plans to acquire Northwest Airlines, though the merger is yet to be finalized.

Happy Fathers Day

As I have grown older Father’s day has meant much to me. I am fortunate enough to still have my father, My Dad is great. He is one of the most kind hearted peoples I know. He takes care of me even as an adult. Today we ot to sped the end of the day together just me and him. I bought him a set of tools which represents much more than a gift.

I gave him a set of tools that we will use together. I feel very lucky to have a father that has alwasy been there for me. No matter what corner of the world I move too I know I can always count on him for support. He helps move and gives ideas “why don’t you do it these way”. Man that guy is smart. Wise beyond my years.

I love my father and I am not afraid to say it. No matter if it was hgih school soccer game, chaprone for international trips where he would be responsible for for other people’s kids my father has always been there. He is a great man and I hope to live to be half the man he is.

Father’s want their children to be better than them. I try my hardest to live up to the hopes and dream he has helped shape for me. My father is a great husband, great mentor, and a great human being. I love you Dad.

As the political season heats up expect more politics from me. Though I will probably be biased towards making a better America I will post some humor from all angles. If you notice the title of post as “I’m Voting Republican” that is part of the joke. I have not yet made my decision who I am going to vote for. The media and the parties haven’t figured out who is going to be running for president! I have and still don’t know who to vote for. As the political campaigns ramp-up and more campaign jobs open up and me looking for jobs I might be on the campaign trail myself.

Rant: Job Hunting and Employment Recruiters

For the past few weeks I have been applying for jobs and interviewing. Craigslist and online job boards have proven in the past few years to be great job hunting and recruiting tools, especially for me. But, it has given way for all types of people to get into the head hunting recruiting business. I have encountered people that boarder on being phone solicitors or spammers. My experience dealing with these people has been mixed.

From what I can tell third party recruiters are combing the job boards and making associations with frequently hiring and growing businesses. The credible trolls interview, screen, and weed out the real applicants from the bad. I have no problems with a third party helping out legitimate businesses in the hiring process. But the trolls I have recently dealt with are terrible. They setup phone interviews for specific times and are late to call or don’t even call. After following up with them reminding them of the call an hour after the supposed interview no response. Ok so maybe they got called into a meeting much like Dana McClive of Persel Gardner covered for her partner Ken Persel:

Chris,

So sorry Ken missed his call with you today. He got pulled into a meeting at the last minute. Could you do a call at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow instead?

Just send me a quick note to let me know if this works, and if it does, please call Ken @ 703-739-xxxx, or 202-669-xxxx (mobile)-same as today.

Thanks Chris.

Love your job.

Best,

Dana McClive

Today I made the calls as requested as I indicated I would. In business I have learned that people are only as good as there word. When you say you are going to do something - do it. If you have to refer back to the contract or what ever then you are failing on your duty. Again a person is only as good as their word. In fact in this case no business or service is being rendered between Persel Gardner and myself. Only words via e-mail.

So what does this really mean to business and employment hunters? When the headhunters are making the contacts they are representing the company they are doing the placement for. So from my impression with Persel Gardner I draw a big picture about the company. The company they had in mind for me to interview with is willing to employ a firm that waste time of potential employees or clients down the road. The company must not be serious about the position I would hired for leaving me to believe I would not be a valued asset. I can say that if I was the company doing the hiring I would not continue to use a firm that does not follow up on their obligations.

As to Persel Gardner it may be possible that I was just one case that slipped the system. I hope they don’t treat other job hunters the same way. When they were unreachable for the second day in a row after two scheduled meetings it put a bad taste in my mouth. Though I have probably ruined my shoot for what ever job they are recruiting for I couldn’t keep it to myself due to the hours wasted preparing and waiting for nothing.

Other recruiters have indeed no showed for calls but no one has no called twice and thus get my worst recruiting firm of the day award. Perhaps getting this award isn’t so bad because of the free link to their site. But at least they may improve from such negative public feedback. I am going to e-mail both Persel & Gardner to see their response and will grant them room for rebuttal as long as it is positive and makes it through my sensors (can’t have something bad about on my own site, can I?). I am sending a link to this post to see if they respond.

Maybe more later.
